Why Virtual Servers?
A virtual server unlike a web hosting package opens up the possibilites for you and your website. Shared hosting servers are exactly that - shared between many different users hosting multiple domain names on single IP addresses.

If a hardware failure is detected then any Virtual Machines running on that device can be moved to another physical machine while the faulty machine is repaired or replaced. What is a virtual server?
A virtual server is very much the same as having your own dedicated server at the fraction of the cost, the only significant difference being that virtual servers have limits imposed on them, such as processor usage, memory usage, file usage etc and also that several "Virtual Machines" will be sharing the same physical dedicated machine - virtual server hosting!
With todays computing technology sharing hardware resources between multiple Virtual Machines isn't an issue due to the increasing power and performance of multi-core processors and much larger memory support.
